DO YOU WANT IT...

The name might be new but the voice sure isn't. The warm, soulful tones of VULA MALINGA have graced tracks by MC COLE and BASEMENT JAXX, while more recently she's toured with BEVERLY KNIGHT and NATE JAMES. Now VULA steps into her own solo spotlight with her first single - 'If You Want It'. The cut, written and produced by VULA and partner BEN JONES, is a shifting mid-tempo mover with a catchy melody and authoritative vocal. For those who like their soul with a house edge there's also three dances mixes with the WOOKIEFIED tweak coming up tops. Label for this one is Diva Geek Records.

SPIRITUAL SOUL...

SPIRITUAL SOUL...

Penryn in darkest deepest Cornwall is the surprising source of a new and never-less-than-interesting album from KYM FRANKLIN and THE CLEFT WAY. Ms. FRANKLIN is an acclaimed US session vocalist and has worked with people like the O'JAYS, AL GREEN and R KELLY. Thought the lady's roots are in gospel, this new album - 'SPIRITUAL SOUL GODDESS' - isn't an overt gospel set. Yes, it does feature gospel songs - like the traditional 'Give Me Jesus' - but, as the title implies, it's more about spiritual consciousness and self-awareness. Supported by BB MAYES and MARK BURLESON - collectively THE CLEFT WAY - KYM'S vocals are powerful and inspiring throughout. For more details go to www.aardvarkrecords.co.uk

TWO MEN WITH THE BLUES

TWO MEN WITH THE BLUES

Country icon WILLIE NELSON and jazz virtuoso WYNTON MARSALIS might sound like odd collaborators, but last year the pair teamed up for a couple of sell-out concerts at New York's famed Lincoln Centre. The shows, part of the 'Singers Over Manhattan' project, were critically acclaimed and it was obvious that though coming from different musical backgrounds, NELSON and MARSALIS shared the same love, passion and respect for the blues. Blue Note Records have now released a 10 track CD featuring concert highlights like 'Night Life', 'Caldonia' and 'Georgia On My Mind'. Throughout, NELSON'S laconic vocals are a perfect foil to MARSALIS' unforced, authoritative horn playing.

JAZZ HOROSCOPE

JAZZ HOROSCOPE

EMI's Stateside imprint has just re-issued one of the 70s most neglected jazz albums - CANNONBALL ADDERLEY'S Soul Zodiac'. Originally released in 1972, the thirteen tracker was one of the first concept albums - based obviously on the signs of the Zodiac. Each star sign had a track consigned to it and each one was linked with narration from RICK HOLMES. For the album, the senior ADDERLEY was joined by his brother NAT'S sextet - which at that time included GEORGE DUKE and ERNIE WATTS - and because the concept was seen by some as 'difficult' the album was long neglected. It found favour again with the Acid Jazz scene and has since become hugely collectable. Produced by DAVID AXELROD the full album is now available on CD. Same label has also issued a two CD set of some of the best of AXELROD'S productions with the two ADDERLEYS… that one's called 'Walk Tall - The David Axelrod Years'.

MORE UNSIGNED SOUL

MORE UNSIGNED SOUL

PHIL DRIVER'S excellent Soul Unsigned set-up has just released its second four-track EP. Logically titled 'EP:02', the collection features some wonderful modern soul from a variety of sources. First up, there's MOSES MAYES' 'Tell Me.' The band are Canadian and their work, of course, is already known on the indie soul circuit. This busy, jazz-inflected little tune should bring them to a wider audience. Second cut comes from MOTHERGROOVE who hail from Barcelona, but their summery 'In 2 My Mind' will conjure up California rather than Catalonia. Third artists on the set are Germany's CANDYCREAM. Their contribution, 'Love What You Do' mines a bass-heavy, slinky groove and offers a counterpoint to the EP's lighter closer - LISA COUTO'S ' Live And Breathe'. LISA comes from Rhode Island and her tune has a catchy, jazz-fusion feel to it . More details about all this music on www.soulunsigned.com while Solar Radio listeners can check it all out on PHIL'S regular show.
