gloria_scottSoul veteran GLORIA SCOTT is back in the big time with her stomping recording of TEN CITY'S 'That's The Way Love Is'. The tune was a big favourite at this year's Baltic Soul Weekender and now Sed Soul Records have issued it with a trio of new mixes. The 12" is, obviously, an extended work out but DJ FRICTION'S Disco Mix and Disco Dub add new flavours to the song which perfectly suits GLORIA'S world weary voice. The tune's currently available from all the best outlets and download sites.

Duane20Williams20-20Yes20my20love20is20realThe revitalized West Midlands-based SOUL JUNCTION LABEL is currently working on creating a fab new web site to spread the word about its excellent real soul product. In the meantime to whet your appetite, here's a rundown of their current, small but perfectly formed soul catalogue –which includes 7" singles, CDs and vinyl albums... proper soul music for proper soul fans!

At present the label can offer eight great 7" vinyl singles. The moment's big one is 'Hold On He's Coming' from Detroit gospel star MIKE JEMISON. The message is inspirational and the tight, dance beats give it huge crossover potential. There are other releases on NATURAL IMPULSE, AUDIO, LOU WILSON and TODAY'S PEOPLE and BILL SPOON. The JESSE JAMES 45, 'I Feel Your Love Changing' sold out in weeks- there's a message there!

On CD, the label can offer THE FALCONS 'Good , Good Feelings' and DUANE WILLIAMS' 'These Songs Are For You' – the latter currently hugely popular on the rare groove scene with the lead track, 'Yes My Love Is Real' also available as a vinyl 45.

The label's other big album is 'The Royal Sessions' from DAVID HUDSON. Recorded over 20 years ago in Memphis with WILLIE MITCHELL, the eight tracker has lain neglected for too long. Now, it can be enjoyed in the format it was intended for – vinyl... and there's a vinyl single too, '(Girl I'm Coming Home To) Something Good.'

Watch out for SJF reviews very soon and, of course, we'll let you know when the SOUL JUNCTION web site is live.

IMAGE_8004r_cropTop soul stylist MARILYN ASHFORD-BROWN (remember her 'Just Doing Me' album?) is currently working on her new long player – a tribute to the late, great PHYLLIS HYMAN. In the meantime, MARILYN has just released a lovely little five track sampler which both looks forward to the new set and harks back to some of her earlier finest moments. The EP opens with a special remix of her last big floor-filler 'I've Got A Feeling' – some really tight beats in there. Next up is a melodic mid-tempo groove – 'You'll Never Find (Another Love Like Me)' which is followed by a cut from the last album – 'Respect Me'. The set's fourth tune is a sparkling cover of Ms. HYMAN'S 'You Know How To Love Me' and proceedings end with a great memory jerker – a version of 'Can You Handle It'. The song, of course, will forever be associated with SHARON REDD, but as a member of the group SASSS, Ms. ASHFORD-BROWN made the original version – producers dubbed SHARON'S vocals over the track just prior to release.

The EP is simply called 'Marilyn Ashford Brown – Mix 2010' and is available at CDBaby and ready to download on iTunes and Amazon. For more details go to

kemMotown artist KEM (remember his stunning 'I Can't Stop Loving You'?) has just released his third album – 'Intimacy'. The LP's title is spot on. The music IS intimate, relaxing and so, so easy on the ear... but it's not easy listening! Outstanding cuts include the opener 'When I'm Loving You' and the Maze-flavoured 'You're On My Mind'. Good to know that the Motown execs are keeping faith with proper soul artists for their iconic label. You can catch an in-depth review of the album on TOBY WALKER'S excellent site  – same site will give you the lowdown on DORIAN WRIGHT'S fine 'Mind Full Of Music' album – which is shaping up to be one of the year's best –along with KEM and 100s of others of course!

motownOctober sees the release of the fourth volume in the Motown/Universal 'A Cellarful Of Motown' series. The new double album features 50 previously unreleased Motown cuts from right across the Motown artist spectrum – STEVIE WONDER, the TEMPTATIONS, the FOUR TOPS, MARVIN GAYE, the SPINNERS, the ORIGINALS, DAVID RUFFIN and many more – including obscure artists like the BLACKBERRIES, the UTOPIANS and the VERSATONES. You also get a hugely rare outing from ROBERT DOBYNE –who went on to join Chicago's the ARTISTICS. As ever the set comes with full track annotations and wonderful archive pictures ... in short unmissable
