BO DIDDLEY ... WRITE ON

The great and truly legendary BO DIDDLEY is the latest tunesmith to be spotlighted in Ace's wonderful Songwriter series. Everyone knows that the man born ELLAS McDANIELS was one of the true founders of modern popular music and his own recorded work is hugely iconic. However, many of his songs were recorded and performed by countless other artists and Ace have collected 24 of the best for this homage to BO. Naturally the album features a smattering of UK 60s beat groups (all self-respecting bands played at least one BO DIDDLEY song in their sets) but the collection also includes great cuts from people like BUDDY HOLLY, THE SHADOWS OF KNIGHT, MICKEY and SYLVIA, THE EVERLY BROTHERS, LOS LOBOS and the ever-enigmatic CAPTAIN BEEFHEART.

KICKIN' IT

KICKIN' IT

Record Kicks is probably Italy's leading soul music label. Set up in 2003 in Milan by NICOLO PAZZOI, it specialises in rare soul, funk and dance floor jazz and right now Record Kicks has a whole bunch of goodies on offer. First up is an album of top drawer, jazz-heavy dance music from Glasgow based RAY HARRIS. On the eponymous album, HARRIS, who's opened for JAMES BROWN, fronts the ultra tight FUSION EXPERIENCE on a set that has already been a big seller in Japan. Cornwall is the base for six piece funk band, UNDERBELLY. Currently being championed by CRAIG CHARLES, their debut on Record Kicks is called 'Seven Feet Under'. Featured vocalist on that set is big-voiced Ausssie ROXIE RAY. She's also featured on a new set from DOJO CUTS - a brash soul and funk set with a great cover of 'Uptight'. Record Kicks also has two great compilations on offer - 'Let's Boogaloo, Volume 5' and 'Mo Record Kicks'. The former is an enigmatic collection of tough soul and funk put together by JAZZMAN GERALD, while the latter is an overview of the quirky label's output. ACE DOES MOTOWN!

The UK's premier reissue label, Ace, has just scored a real coup by releasing its very first all Motown album - 'THE SATINTONES SING'. Detroit's SATINTONES were the first male vocal group signed by BERRY GORDY and their 'My Beloved' was the very first release on the actual Motown label. The group had a unique sound which mixed doo-wop with embryonic soul, and their repertoire was furnished by the likes of BERRY GORDY, SMOKEY ROBINSON, and POPCORN WYLIE. This album features 26 cuts - all the group's singles, alternate takes and 11 previously unissued tracks... a must, naturally, for Motown collectors. For more info - go to www.acerecords.co.uk

SINGULARLY SOULFUL ...

SINGULARLY SOULFUL ...

Vinyl collectors and general soul junkies need to know that those awfully nice people over at Ace have just issued a whole clutch of lovely little seven inch 45s. The group's Kent imprint has seven discs out and as you can probably guess they all have a Northern bias and feature tracks that are as rare as any of the clich├ęd metaphors that lesser publications use. All good solid soul, of course, but of particular note is 'Watcha Gonna Do' from Goldwax's PHILLIP AND THE FAITHFULLS - a great mid-tempo item, as is the better-known 'Come Out Of The Sandbox' from MARY LOVE while for those who measure things by their monetary value there's JESSE DAVIES' 'Hang On In There Girl'. We're told that original copies currently fetch over a grand! Over at Ace's BGP label there's a quintet of funkier vinyl - all rare and desirable... most notably ROOSEVELT MATTHEWS' version of 'Tighten Up'. For a long time this have been bootlegged as 'Tighten Up Tighter'. Other featured artists include BILLY GARNER, THE ETERNAL FLAMES and BRENDA GEORGE. All releases are in limited editions - so grab 'em while you can... more details - www.acerecords.com

OLDSTERS DELIVER

OLDSTERS DELIVER

To prove that age is no barrier to creating fabulous soul, two veteran groups have just released new albums that all the young pretenders should study long and hard to hear how soul magic can be created. First up is a wonderful 14 tracker from a revitalised BLOODSTONE - 'Now! That's What I'm Talkin' About'. The set is heavy on the ballads but that's no bad thing with a cover of EDDIE FLOYD'S' I've Never Found A Girl' and a remake of 'Natural High' both outstanding. The date on the album suggests an original release date of 2008, but it's deservedly being heavily repromoted. The musical menu is a little more varied on the evergreen TEMPTATIONS' newie - 'Still Here'. After a brief intro the set opens with 'Change Has Come' - an edgy tribute to OBAMA'S election while 'Listen Up' is a throwback to the group's NORMANS WHITFIELD era. Highlight is the lovely 'Warm Summer Night' and RON TYSON is on superb form on 'Woman'. Two quiet unmissable sets. For full reviews go to TOBY WALKER'S excellent site www.soulwalking.co.uk
